The listing below currently shows only federally-owned and operated prisons, because private detention facilities are in a state of flux.
Shortly after taking office, President Joe Biden signed Executive Order 14006, which aimed to end the federal government’s “reliance on privately operated criminal detention facilities.” Although the Biden administration managed to shut down most of those facilities, President Donald Trump rescinded Executive Order 14006. Private detention facilities are now reopening and accepting inmates.
However, because it will take some time for the federal government to move inmates back to the private detention facilities, the federal prison spreadsheet currently does not include those facilities. When that information becomes available, the spreadsheet will be updated.
